Donovan Quinn has been surrounded by music all of his life. Quinn is the son of Dave Carter, bassist and vocalist for legendary 60's psychedelic group Country Weather, and has been writing songs from an early age. In 2001 Quinn entered CDR cult consciousness as ½ of the San Franciscan duo The Skygreen Leopards. Since then he’s released several records with the SGL’s and a few home recorded affairs from his youth (under the Verdure banner), but had refrained from issuing any of his stockpile of solo material. The self-imposed silence finally ended in late ‘07 when Soft Abuse, via sub-label Puissant, excavated October Lanterns, a mini album of dark, woodsy, melancholia recorded and shelved five years prior for reasons long since forgotten).
Following an extended moratorium with SGL’s and the re-release of October Lanterns, Donovan has re-emerged as Donovan Quinn & the 13th Month; a new outlet to showcase his singular lyrical abilities and taste for sun-baked song. His debut self-titled LP (and Sister Alchemy 7”) will be the first widely available collection of his solo visions. Featuring aide from a small group of friends & collaborators known as 13th Month (including Jason Quever of Papercuts, Karl Bauer of Axolotl, Hélène Renaut, and Jess Roberts), Quinn has created a bright spectrum of work perhaps best described as ‘American.’ Quever, having worked with Donovan on the The Skygreen Leopards' Disciples of California, closely collaborated with Quinn on the album, in addition to servicing as producer and engineer. Donovan’s interest in Ronnie Lane, Skip Spence, Jacobites, and Basement Tapes-era Dylan is evident in this music. |
