THE BATTLES Lycanthropy CD [The Blue Curtain (CA), 2001] $11

“With hooks aplenty, The Battles have produced a Lennon-inspired collection of pop grandeur. But, this is not just a Beatles throwback; the Battles also borrow from other talented songsmiths like Syd Barrett to Tom Verlaine, without sounding trite or contrived.” – Phil Waldorf, Other Music

THE CHILD READERS Memory and Fantasy CD [Mallard Lake (SE), 2004] $13

"Following the fading battery of tern cries on their last record Dark Laughter, the Child Readers return with a more spacious and meditative collection of song-clouds recorded in northern California and Germany in 2003. Jason Honea (of the Knit Separates, Teenage Panzer Korps and Social Unrest) and Loren Chasse (of Thuja, the Blithe Sons, Of, Coelacanth and a host of other Jewelled Antler projects) are here improvising songs with voice, mandolin, harp, guitar, electronics, percussion, piano and monochord, once again invoking the spirits of locations and situations to lay paths for the music. Through a crude method of recording, playback and re-recording using different media ranging from mini disc, car stereo and handheld cassette recorder, to battery-powered speakers and dictaphone." - Mallard Lake Recordings

FELIPE + FORTÉ Eke Out CD [Sublight (CA), 2006] $11

"Nick Forté and Dino Felipe team up yet again for Eke Out, the second sand-blasted album from this dark alliance. Their highly regarded first album, Shaggy Black, which Pitchfork deemed 'gorgeous' and The Wire magazine called kinda genius, marked the beginning of a skewed and spewed musical endeavor. The 10 track Eke Out continues in a similar vein as its predicesor, though perhaps playing up the binary bile and pushing the haze envelope even further. This thing floats with metallic harshness and a brutish pyschedelic clausterphobia, incorporating vocals, percussion, synths, guitars and computer into a frothy soup." - Sublight Records

STEFAN NEVILLE Do Not Destroy CD [Last Visible Dog (USA), 2006] $11

"This is the same Stefan Neville from Pumice, as well as from collaborations with the likes of CJA, Witcyst, Matt Middleton, Antony Milton, Chris Knox (Tall Dwarfs) and Campbell Kneale (Birchville Cat Motel), so you should know what to expect:  eccentric one-man-band lo-fi goodness.  But where Stefan's other releases have always taken the existence of pop-music for granted albeit filtered and fucked 'til broken, 'do not destroy' makes no such assumption. Recorded in the night-times, while daytimes were consumed with a mundane filing job, the Do Not Destroy album is an exercise in desperate escapism that is ultimately more personal than Neville's other works (and also his most challenging.)  Do Not Destroy is the original noisy, primitive Neville." - Last Visible Dog

STEVEN R. SMITH The Anchorite CD [Root Strata (USA), 2007] $12

"Originally released in 2006 on Important Records as a limited run LP in their ongoing Arts & Crafts Series, Root Strata is proud to present the reissue of The Anchorite, a dazzling jewel in Smiths substantial discography. Performed live to two track with the aide of tape loops and prerecorded takes, the music maintains a drifting, painterly quality that easily evokes the American west as much as the European east which Smith so lovingly mines for his Hala Strana recordings. Sepia toned and tinged with a luminous distortion, The Anchorite, as the name suggests, is reserved, pulled back and solemn, some kind of hermetic prayer for the end of the world. Beautifully repackaged with new artwork in a heavy black & white gatefold CD case with offset printing." - Root Strata

STEVEN R. SMITH Owl CD [Digitalis (USA), 2006] $12

"Steven R. Smith's name has become more commonplace over the last half-decade, and that's a very good thing. From his monumental works as Hala Strana to being a prominent contributor to many Jewelled Antler projects, his sound is distinct.
This is the first brand new solo album from Steven R. Smith since last year's epic 'The Anchorite.' Few artists can boast the impressive discography Smith does, full of far more hits than misses. And with 'Owl,' he shows that he's still got new tricks up his sleeve. On here, you'll find some of the things you expect with a new Steven R. Smith record: sprase, angular walls of his trademark guitar playing with embellishments from an array of acoustic instrumention. But there's a new twist here: vocals. Yep, vocals. Smith unleashes his voice on 'Owl' and does so in such an impressive fashion that it leaves me asking what took so long?" - Digitalis

SOFTWAR Softwar CD [Digitalis (USA), 2006] $12

"What could these musicians do after collectively playing on a million records, releasing a million more, and nurturing a scene that is both international and inner-visionary? Why not release a record that is so stunning in its scope and so well executed in its manner that it defies simple comparisons. Such is the story of Softwar and this lushly presented gift to our eyes and ears. Focusing on what could be called more "traditional" rhythm structures, the songs merely lull you into a false security before melting your brain with some heavy layers of tone, provided by multiple organs and keyboards.
Softwar is comprised of four essential members of the Jewelled Antler treehouse. Loren Chasse, fresh from his blistering noise work on Kyrgyz, shows us a softer but deeper side with these swirling opium-induced gems. Playing with him are the equally talented Christine Boepple (also a key part of the Jewelled Antler sound, as well as Kyrgyz and Whysp), Kerry McLaughlin (who is not only a key contributor to Franciscan Hobbies & the amazing but somewhat obscure Buried Civilizations, but also a supporting member of Jason Honea's Shitty Listener and previously played w/ The Skygreen Leopards) and last, but certainly not least, Franciscan Hobbyist and Shitty Listener, Geoff Koops. This foursome certainly keeps busy, but all their other works only help to increase Softwar's magic." - Digitalis
